In the summer of 2004, in the small town of Lee, Maine, a domestic dispute turned fatal, ending the life of 51-year-old Rosemarie Dyer. On July 2nd, inside her home, Rosemarie was shot in the leg with a shotgun. She was rushed to the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she was listed in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries two days later, on July 4, 2004.
The immediate suspect in the shooting was her husband, Carl S.
Dyer, who was 50 years old at the time. He was the one who placed the 911 call to Penobscot County sheriff's deputies on the afternoon of the shooting. Investigators noted that law enforcement had been called to the couple's home on multiple occasions for domestic-related incidents prior to the fatal shooting. Initially, Carl Dyer was arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated assault and held on $20,000 cash bail. Following his wife's death, the charges against him were upgraded.
In October 2005, Carl Dyer reached a plea agreement with the state and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. This plea deal allowed him to avoid a murder conviction. On December 8, 2005, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison without the possibility of probation. His scheduled release was for May 2022. However, on March 28, 2019, Carl Dyer, then 65, died at the Maine State Prison in Warren. Authorities stated that no foul play was suspected in his death.
