In the pre-dawn hours of August 15, 2005, a single gunshot shattered the quiet of an isolated home at the end of Roberts Road in Sabattus, Maine. Inside, 29-year-old Melissa Mendoza was found dead, the victim of a fatal shooting. The call to 911 was made by Daniel Roberts, her 35-year-old ex-boyfriend and the father of their two-year-old daughter, Savanna. He claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense.
