On August 15, 2005, Melissa Mendoza, a 29-year-old mother of three from California, was fatally shot in the garage of her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Roberts, in Sabattus, Maine. The couple had been engaged in a contentious custody battle over their 2-year-old daughter, Savanna. Mendoza had previously taken Savanna to California without Roberts' consent, leading to legal disputes and supervised visitations upon their return to Maine.
