On January 28, 2025, 37-year-old Hispanic woman Oriana Rodriguez was fatally shot in an alley in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago. The incident occurred around 4:50 a.m. in the 7700 block of South Oglesby Avenue, where she and another victim, 39-year-old Hispanic woman Yeris Norelis Jimenez Castillo, were found with gunshot wounds to their heads. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third woman, also Hispanic, survived the attack despite suffering gunshot wounds to her face and chest. She managed to seek help from nearby residents, knocking on doors and pleading for assistance. Witnesses described her as covered in blood and in desperate need of medical attention.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding any arrests or identified suspects in the case. However, sources familiar with the investigation suggested that the three women may have been kidnapped before the shooting. Investigators are exploring leads that indicate they were migrants who may have been targeted for execution-style killings. It remains unclear whether they were trafficked prior to their deaths. The surviving victim, who was critically injured, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.
The tragic event has raised concerns about violence in the area, particularly given the lack of immediate reports of gunfire to emergency services. The neighborhood was previously monitored by the city’s ShotSpotter network, which was discontinued in September 2023. As a result, the surviving victim had to seek help on her own, knocking on doors until she found assistance.
