Samantha Zapata, a 26-year-old woman, was found shot to death on the morning of August 23, 2014, inside a residence in the 8300 block of South Archer Avenue in Willow Springs, a southwest suburb of Chicago. According to the Cook County medical examiner, her death was ruled a homicide, and she was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:47 a.m. alongside a 35-year-old man, identified in news reports as her husband, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities described the incident as a murder-suicide.
In the days that followed, colleagues and students at Rowe-Clark Math and Science Academy in Chicago, where Samantha worked as an alumni coordinator and senior advisor, grieved her loss as the school reopened for the first day of classes. The school community remembered her for her work with students and the guidance she provided to seniors preparing for life after graduation.
Law enforcement indicated there was no ongoing search for a suspect: the man found with Samantha died at the scene from a self-inflicted wound, and the medical examiner's findings supported the determination of a murder-suicide. No arrests were made in connection with her killing. Subsequent memorial listings also recorded her date of death and location in the Chicago area.
