In the Smoketown neighborhood of Louisville, a Saturday morning turned tragic when 70-year-old Michael Evans was fatally shot on South Preston Street. The male victim was discovered by Metro Police officers just after 11 a.m. suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite receiving immediate aid at the scene, he was pronounced dead. A witness described Evans as a Black man who was often seen walking his pit bull in the neighborhood.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a nearby
home in the 900 block of South Preston Street, where a suspect was believed to have entered. Surveillance footage and a witness account were crucial in identifying 25-year-old Dakarai McDonald as the alleged perpetrator. A witness reportedly followed McDonald after the shooting and saw him enter the residence. The witness was able to identify McDonald from surveillance footage that showed him carrying a handgun.
Following the identification of the suspect, a tense standoff ensued as the Louisville Metro Police Department's SWAT team was called to the scene. After nearly six hours, the standoff concluded with McDonald being taken into custody and transported to a hospital. A search of the home where McDonald was apprehended uncovered a handgun, a shotgun, and a black hooded sweatshirt with a distinctive design that he was allegedly wearing at the time of the shooting.
Dakarai McDonald was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, as well as possession of a handgun and a firearm by a convicted felon. In a subsequent court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. A judge barred him from having any contact with the victim's family and from possessing any guns. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the shooting remains under investigation by detectives.
