Tavontee Fox, a 24-year-old African American man from Waukegan, Illinois, was fatally shot on February 9, 2025, in Beach Park. The incident occurred around 12:10 p.m. in the 39300 block of Melbourne Court, where multiple gunshots were reported. Witnesses described seeing two African American men, estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old, fleeing the scene. Deputies arriving at the location discovered spent shell casings and shattered glass from a vehicle.
Shortly after the shooting, a vehicle transported Tavontee Fox to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted the following day confirmed that he had succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators determined that Fox had been seated in the passenger seat of a vehicle when the shooting occurred. In addition to the vehicle, a nearby home was also struck by gunfire, though no injuries were reported inside the residence.
Authorities identified Cyncere L. Tillman, a 24-year-old man from Waukegan, as the primary suspect in the case. According to investigators, Tillman had arranged to meet Tavontee Fox near a friend's house in Beach Park. During their interaction, an argument escalated, leading Tillman to allegedly fire multiple rounds at Fox while he was seated in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was also targeted but was not reported to have sustained injuries.
Following a thorough investigation, Lake County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Tillman on February 18, 2025, in Waukegan. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and remains in custody at the Lake County Jail. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case. Sheriff John D. Idleburg commended the detectives for their dedication and investigative efforts, ensuring that the suspect was apprehended.
