In the early hours of Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, the life of 35-year-old Bryant Johnson of Louisville, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. A charismatic man known for his love of sports, his greatest devotion was to his young daughter. The events that led to his death began to unfold around 3:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Bardstown Road, a busy thoroughfare known for its vibrant nightlife. It was here that Johnson sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the groin.
Despite his severe injury, Johnson managed to get into his vehicle and drive a short distance. His flight for life ended abruptly at the intersection of Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue, where he crashed into another car. First responders arrived at the scene of the collision to find Johnson inside his vehicle, gravely wounded. He was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital, but his injuries proved to be insurmountable, and he died shortly after 4 a.m. The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured.
In the days following the shooting, the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Homicide Unit launched an investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of 28-year-old Lanesha Blakey, who was identified as Johnson's former girlfriend. Blakey was taken into custody without incident on West Main Street and subsequently charged with murder in connection with Johnson's death. She also faced an assault charge stemming from an altercation with another woman just before the shooting, during which she allegedly struck the woman with a handgun.
The investigation, aided by surveillance video from the area, suggested a domestic dispute as the catalyst for the violence. Court documents revealed the sequence of events, from the initial assault to the fatal shooting. Blakey was held at Louisville Metro Corrections. During a court appearance, her attorney claimed she was a victim in the situation and successfully argued for a reduction in her bond, citing her strong community ties and lack of a serious criminal record. She was to be placed on house arrest if she posted bond.
