Twenty-year-old Ethan Pereira, a young man of Goan descent, tragically lost his life in a random shooting at a drag racing event in Oakland, California, on January 26, 2025. Ethan, who had moved to the United States with his family over a decade ago, was attending the event as a spectator when gunfire erupted. The incident occurred in Oakland’s Eastlake neighborhood, approximately 20-30 minutes from his home.
Reports indicate that a car performing “donuts,” a popular drag racing stunt, crashed into a spectator, triggering the violence. Multiple gunshot victims were transported to local hospitals, where Ethan later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the shooting, leading to the arrests of a juvenile suspect and his co-defendant, Leonardo Perez Baltazar, on February 5, 2025. During their arrests, law enforcement recovered one rifle and three pistols. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office subsequently charged both individuals with their involvement in the homicide, as well as various firearms-related offenses. The arrests marked a significant development in the case, providing some measure of justice for Ethan’s grieving family and the broader community.
Ethan’s passing sent shockwaves through the Goan community in the United States, as well as among his loved ones in his hometown of Dramapur, Salcete. His funeral service was held at St. Cyprian Church in California, followed by burial at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Family members, including his parents Anunsya and Celio, his sister Ember, and numerous relatives, gathered to bid him farewell. Ethan was remembered as a kind-hearted individual who had a profound impact on those around him. He was actively involved in his parish as an altar server and had represented his school in wrestling, earning several achievements. His mother, Anunsya, expressed the deep void left by his absence, describing him as her joy, inspiration, and pride.
The tragic circumstances surrounding Ethan’s death have raised concerns about safety at unsanctioned drag racing events, which have been known to attract large crowds and sometimes lead to violent altercations. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful that justice will be served and that measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
