In the quiet town of Mishawaka, Indiana, the life of 17-year-old Takoda Simon Gallegos, a male of Pokagon Potawatomi descent, was cut short on the evening of January 15, 2025. The fatal incident unfolded inside a residence in the 200 block of Indiana Avenue, where police responded to a call around 8:45 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Gallegos on the floor, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the officers, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting was swiftly undertaken by the Mishawaka Police Department's Major Crimes Unit. Their work quickly led to the identification of a juvenile suspect. With the assistance of the St. Joseph County Metro SWAT team, a 14-year-old was taken into custody just hours after the shooting and was held at the Juvenile Justice Center. Authorities indicated that they believed the shooting was an isolated incident and that there was no further threat to the public.
Further investigation led to a second suspect, 17-year-old Latrell Vaughn. Two days after the shooting, a sealed arrest warrant was issued for Vaughn, who was subsequently captured in Mishawaka and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail. Due to his age, Vaughn was set to be charged as an adult under Indiana law. The charges filed against him included murder, armed robbery, pointing a firearm, and a felony firearm enhancement. The younger suspect faced similar charges of murder and armed robbery in the juvenile court system.
In August, Latrell Vaughn's case went to trial. The jury reached a verdict on some of the charges, finding him guilty of armed robbery and pointing a firearm. However, the jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision on the most serious charge, murder, resulting in a deadlock on that count. The court decided not to immediately enter judgments of conviction on the guilty verdicts to avoid potential double jeopardy issues that could prevent a retrial on the murder charge.
