On a tragic Friday evening, September 2, 2022, the life of 14-year-old Devonte Freeman of South Bend was cut short by a fatal gunshot wound. The incident occurred inside a residence located in the 600 block of Locust Street in Mishawaka, Indiana. Police were dispatched to the home around 7 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered the young male suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The death of Devonte Freeman marked the 26th shooting homicide in St. Joseph County for that year, and he was one of five victims under the age of 18. His death left the local community in a state of shock and sadness, with many residents and local advocacy groups, such as Mamas Against Violence, expressing their grief and frustration over the rising tide of gun violence. Neighbors in the area voiced their concerns about the increase in crime and called for a greater police presence to ensure the safety of their community.
The Mishawaka Police Department's Major Crime Unit has been actively investigating the homicide. Detectives conducted numerous interviews and returned to the scene to gather further evidence and speak with potential witnesses. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist them in their efforts to bring justice for Devonte Freeman and his family. The results of an autopsy were pending as the investigation continued.
