In the early morning hours of January 20, 2025, the life of Rodney Nixon Jr., a 37-year-old Black male from Indianapolis, was cut short by violence. Police were called to an apartment complex in the 200 block of North Warman Avenue around 3:30 a.m. following reports of shots fired. Inside an interior hallway of the building, officers discovered Nixon suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives investigating the case learned that a disturbance had broken out inside one of the apartments shortly before the shooting. Their investigation soon identified a suspect: Nixon's 16-year-old son, Zavyon Nixon. Investigators also found that the teenager had an active arrest warrant for dangerous possession of a firearm.
On January 30, with assistance from the Indianapolis Public School Police, detectives located and arrested Zavyon on the outstanding warrant, though he was released sometime later. As the homicide investigation progressed, detectives obtained a new warrant for murder. On March 31, 2025, Zavyon was arrested for a second time in connection with his father's death.
Following his arrest, Zavyon Nixon was charged with murder. The case concluded when he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
