On January 30, 2025, authorities in Oroville, California, responded to a distressing scene where a burned vehicle was discovered near Condor Road and Red Tape Road. Inside the vehicle, investigators found the remains of two individuals. Through DNA analysis, the victims were identified as Esequiel Valle-Arellano, a 22-year-old Hispanic male from San Diego, and Juan Daniel Arreola-Solano, a 26-year-old Hispanic male from Eureka.
A forensic pathologist later confirmed that both men had died from gunshot wounds.
Detectives quickly pieced together evidence indicating that Esequiel Valle-Arellano, a 22-year-old Hispanic male, and Juan Daniel Arreola-Solano, a 26-year-old Hispanic male, had traveled to Oroville from Humboldt County on the morning of January 30. Investigators determined that the victims were accompanied by Wesley Evans, a 45-year-old male from Rio Dell, and Samuel Ashley, a 43-year-old male from Ferndale. As the investigation progressed, authorities uncovered evidence of a dispute between Ashley and at least one of the victims related to a recent gun and drug transaction. This conflict appears to have escalated when Evans, Ashley, and the victims traveled to Condor Road near Red Tape Road. Shortly after arriving, Esequiel Valle-Arellano, a 22-year-old Hispanic male, and Juan Daniel Arreola-Solano, a 26-year-old Hispanic male, were murdered, and their vehicle was set on fire to cover up the crime.
Following weeks of investigation, Butte County Sheriff’s Office detectives, in collaboration with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office and CAL FIRE law enforcement personnel, obtained arrest warrants for Wesley Evans, a 45-year-old male, and Samuel Ashley, a 43-year-old male, on charges of murder. On February 10, 2025, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team, with support from Butte County detectives and other law enforcement agencies, arrested both suspects in Humboldt County. Search warrants were also executed at their homes. After a week-long investigation in Humboldt County, Evans and Ashley were transported to the Butte County Jail on February 14. Both suspects were scheduled to be arraigned in the Butte County Superior Court on February 18.
Authorities believe that the motive behind the killings stemmed from a dispute over firearms and narcotics. The situation escalated when the group traveled to the remote area in Oroville, where the victims were fatally shot before their vehicle was set ablaze. The suspects then fled the scene and returned to Humboldt County.
