Julius Ruff, a 32-year-old resident of Oroville, California, tragically lost his life on January 4, 2018, due to a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. The incident occurred in the 2700 block of Fort Wayne Street, where Ruff was involved in an altercation with Joshua Sealy and Christy Seim. According to police reports, Sealy and Seim drove to Ruff's home, where an argument ensued.
During the confrontation, Seim allegedly attacked Ruff, and Sealy fired a single round from a handgun, striking Ruff in the chest. The same bullet also grazed Seim's head, causing her injury. Ruff was immediately taken to Oroville Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, both Sealy and Seim were arrested and faced multiple charges. Sealy, 31, was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He initially pleaded not guilty but later, in March 2019, he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a firearm. Seim, 27, faced charges of second-degree robbery and battery. She also pleaded not guilty and remained in custody pending further court proceedings.
The case garnered significant attention in the local community, highlighting issues of gun violence and the complexities of criminal justice proceedings. The investigation revealed that all parties involved knew each other, adding a layer of personal conflict to the tragic event. The legal proceedings continued for several months, with Sealy's bail set at $2.1 million and multiple court appearances scheduled to determine the final outcomes for both defendants.
