Jennings, a dedicated member of the Butte County Sheriff's Department, was responding to a domestic violence call when the incident occurred. The call reported a man, Pao Xiong, beating his wife. Upon arrival, Jennings engaged in a gunfight with Xiong in a dark field.
During the exchange, Jennings was struck five times, with two bullets hitting his neck, one his wrist, and two being stopped by his bullet-resistant vest. Despite his injuries, Jennings managed to return fire, fatally wounding Xiong with a single shot. Jennings' last act was to radio for an ambulance, but he succumbed to his injuries approximately two hours later at Enloe Hospital in Chico.
