Salvador Anthony Fuentes, a 26-year-old resident of Oroville, California, tragically lost his life on December 25, 2017. On that fateful Christmas Day, Butte County Sheriff's Office deputies and detectives responded to a shooting incident in the 2900 block of Clark Road in Oroville. Upon arrival, they discovered Fuentes' lifeless body, which had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation quickly determined that Fuentes' death was a result of these gunshot injuries, leading authorities to classify the case as a homicide.
The investigation into Fuentes' murder was extensive and complex, spanning several years and involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Early in the investigation, detectives identified Johnny Ray Cabrera, a 34-year-old resident of Chico, as a primary suspect. Cabrera was believed to be associated with a local criminal street gang, and the murder was suspected to be gang-related. Despite the initial lack of eyewitnesses and Cabrera's alibi, which was supported by his then-girlfriend and her mother, the case remained active.
In 2018, the Chico Police Department's Violence Suppression Unit and the FBI's Chico Office joined the Butte County Sheriff's Office in the investigation. Over the next few years, detectives conducted numerous interviews and executed search warrants at multiple locations. In 2021, the Butte County District Attorney's Office also became involved, providing additional resources and support. During this period, new evidence emerged, including the recantation of the alibi provided by Cabrera's girlfriend and her mother. They admitted that the alibi was false and that Cabrera had confessed to shooting Fuentes, claiming self-defense.
In May 2021, an arrest warrant was issued for Cabrera, who was already incarcerated at Corcoran State Prison for unrelated charges. Detectives interviewed Cabrera at the prison and continued to gather evidence to support the murder charge. On July 16, 2021, Cabrera was formally charged with the murder of Salvador Fuentes and was subsequently transported to the Butte County Jail.
The legal proceedings culminated in December 2023, when Cabrera was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder. During the sentencing, emotional statements from Fuentes' family members were read in court, highlighting the profound impact of his loss. The case underscored the dedication of law enforcement and the resilience of the justice system in seeking justice for Fuentes and his family.
