On a cold winter’s night in Elkhart, Indiana, the life of 18-year-old Fernanda Leon was tragically cut short. On Sunday, January 26, 2025, gunshots rang out near the intersection of South 6th Street and Hively Avenue, prompting a 911 call to the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center at approximately 11:20 p.m. Shortly after, a private vehicle arrived at Elkhart General Hospital carrying an unconscious Leon, who was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of medical staff to save her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Originally from Mission, Texas, the young woman was a resident of Osceola, Indiana, at the time of her death. The Elkhart County Homicide Unit immediately took charge of the investigation, which they have described as active and ongoing. In the early morning hours following the shooting, law enforcement officers, as part of their investigation, were dispatched to a residence in the 2700 block of South 6th Street.
At this location, a standoff ensued, which lasted for about an hour. It concluded around 6:30 a.m. when a man and a woman exited the house with their hands up. The man was searched and taken into custody by the police. However, it remains unclear what, if any, connection this individual has to Leon's death, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or announced any arrests specifically in her case. The investigation into the shooting death of Fernanda Leon continues, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward and contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit or Michiana Crime Stoppers.
