On the night of February 14, Bowling was staying at the Hometown Inn & Suites, located on Mustang Road in Jacksonville. Just after midnight, Jacksonville police responded to reports of a shooting at the hotel. Upon arrival, officers discovered Bowling had been fatally shot. A 23-year-old pregnant woman, who was also present at the scene, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital. Her injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and she was reported to be in stable condition.
Following an investigation, Jacksonville authorities identified Alvin Douglas Gay Jr., a 33-year-old man, as the suspect in the shooting. Witness statements, surveillance footage, and evidence collected from the scene led detectives to Gay. He was charged with murder, attempted murder, armed burglary with assault or battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and tampering with evidence. Police confirmed that Bowling and the injured woman were acquainted and had been staying at the hotel together. Gay initially fled the scene but was later apprehended after an arrest warrant was issued.
