In the early hours of a Saturday morning, the life of 68-year-old James David Barron came to a tragic end in his Gainesville, Georgia, home. On March 8, 2025, Hall County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call at approximately 1:15 a.m. at a residence on Bayridge Drive. Upon their arrival, they discovered Barron unresponsive in a bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.
He was immediately transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on Suzanne Renee Mericle, a 61-year-old woman who lived with Barron and was in a relationship with him. Mericle was present at the home when deputies arrived. Following their initial investigation, authorities arrested her in connection with Barron's death. She was subsequently charged with felony murder, aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Mericle is being held at the Hall County Jail without bond.
Further details surrounding the incident emerged when Barron's two children filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Mericle. The lawsuit alleges that the couple had been arguing, which led to Barron locking himself in a bedroom for his safety. The complaint further claims that Mericle, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, shot Barron through the locked bedroom door, resulting in his death. Barron was a former defensive end for the University of Tennessee football team from 1974 to 1978 and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 1979. He was remembered by friends and family for his warmth, generosity, and love for his family.
