In the winter of 2024, the life of 34-year-old Destyn Rashad Alexander, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Gainesville, Georgia. On the afternoon of January 19th, police responded to a shooting at a Motel 6 on Monroe Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Alexander had been shot in the chest. He was quickly transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting rapidly identified a suspect: Corey Maurice Rucker, a 47-year-old from Gainesville who was known to Alexander. Authorities determined that following the shooting, Rucker fled the scene in Alexander's burgundy Nissan Murano. This initiated a multi-agency manhunt to locate and apprehend him.
Through the collaborative efforts of the Gainesville Police Department, the Hall County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the FBI, and the DeKalb County Police SWAT team, Rucker was tracked to a motel in DeKalb County. In the early morning hours of January 20th, at approximately 4:00 a.m., law enforcement arrested Rucker without incident. He was subsequently transported to the Hall County Jail. Rucker faced a string of serious charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and theft of a motor vehicle.
