In the spring of 2024, the life of 16-year-old Jaishawn Overstreet, a male from Gwinnett County, was cut short in a fatal shooting in Gainesville, Georgia. On the afternoon of April 27, Overstreet traveled to the Ridgecrest Apartments on Roper Hill Road for what authorities have described as a meeting for 'alleged criminal activity.' During this encounter, he was shot in the head. First responders rushed him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The investigation into Overstreet's death led to the identification and eventual arrest of three teenage suspects. The first to be taken into custody was 19-year-old Ja'quez Jeremiah Marquis Sims of Gainesville. He was arrested at his home on Swann Drive following the execution of a search warrant and charged with murder and aggravated assault. In June, a second suspect, 18-year-old Quaran Jamir Jackson of Gillsville, was apprehended at his residence and also faced charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. The third and final suspect, 18-year-old Kylane Rochod Williams of Monroe, was arrested in June 2025 after being on the run for over a year. He was charged with malice murder and aggravated assault.
As the legal process unfolded, additional charges were brought against the suspects. Both Sims and Jackson were later charged with multiple felony counts of participation in criminal street gang activity. The investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence. At the time of their arrests, all three suspects were booked into the Hall County Jail and held without bond.
