On the night of April 4th, Gayton was shot while inside a vehicle on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a crime that would later be described as a drug-related incident. He was rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation led police to search for a person of interest, described as a Black male, approximately 5'0' to 5'3' with a medium to stocky build and close-cropped hair.
The investigation into Gayton's death pressed on, and eventually, two suspects were identified and apprehended. The case took a significant turn when it was revealed that the shooting had been witnessed by Gayton's 15-year-old son. This harrowing detail underscored the brutal nature of the crime. The two men charged in connection with the murder were Marquis Lejon Studivant and Tadrick Terrian Osborne.
