On September 27, 2011, Hassan Savyid, age 40, was killed in Oakland, California, in what was one of the many homicides that contributed to Oakland's elevated homicide rate that year. Savyid was found in East Oakland, an area that has struggled with gun violence and gang-related crime for years.
