Jacoby Diego Morales, a 24-year-old Hispanic/Latino male, was shot late in the morning on May 22, 2025, in Oakland’s San Antonio neighborhood after what police described as a street dispute. Gunfire erupted around 11:30 a.m. on the 1300–1400 block of 18th Avenue; wounded multiple times, Morales managed to move away from the initial scene before collapsing near the 1700 block of International Boulevard, where he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
He died of his injuries in the early hours of the following day. His identity and age are reflected in public death notices and memorial listings, which also confirm his date of death.
Detectives quickly focused on a suspect who, according to authorities and court records summarized in subsequent reports, did not previously know Morales. The following week, prosecutors charged 43-year-old Oakland resident Gilbert Berry with murder and possession of an assault weapon in connection with the killing. Police believe the confrontation may have been rooted in the men’s interest in the same woman. Berry was arrested after a standoff and booked without bail while the case moved toward initial court proceedings in June.
