Edson Sainnatus, a 27-year-old man from Fort Pierce, Florida, was killed in a shooting on April 30, 2025. The incident occurred near Edwards Road and South 23rd Street, prompting a significant law enforcement response. According to authorities, the shooting involved two vehicles—a Dodge Durango and a smaller compact car—that exchanged gunfire. Surveillance footage captured individuals exiting the vehicles and engaging in a firefight before one of the cars fled the scene while being shot at.
Witnesses flagged down responding officers, directing them to a person walking away from a car that had been struck by gunfire. Deputies arriving at the scene discovered multiple firearms and shell casings scattered in the area.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that five individuals were taken into custody for questioning in connection with the shooting. Among those arrested was 29-year-old Carlos Covarrubius, who was charged with possession of a weapon or ammunition by a felon. Surveillance footage showed Covarrubius near the scene, manipulating a rifle before handing it to another individual. Additional video evidence revealed him exiting a residence armed with an AR-style pistol and later handling an AR-15-style rifle. Covarrubius had a prior felony conviction for cocaine and marijuana-related charges in 2018. Authorities executed a search warrant at his listed address, recovering multiple firearms.
Sheriff Richard Del Toro stated that the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives reviewing video evidence and interviewing witnesses. Law enforcement officials have not yet determined a motive for the shooting or whether Sainnatus was specifically targeted. The sheriff's office has urged the public to avoid the area as they continue their inquiries. The presence of K-9 units and aerial surveillance was deployed to track any additional individuals involved in the incident. Authorities are also examining a nearby residence as part of their investigation. The sheriff emphasized the importance of public vigilance and assured that all available resources were being utilized to resolve the case.
