An evening of shopping turned deadly at the Foothills Mall in Fort Collins, Colorado, on April 5, 2025, when gunfire erupted, claiming the life of 27-year-old Luis Angel Arreguin. Arreguin, a male from Westminster, was on a sidewalk between the parking lot and a mall building when the shooting occurred around 5 p.m. He was rushed to a local hospital, but ultimately succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Larimer County Coroner's Office.
Tragically, Luis was not the only victim of this violent act; his older brother, 37-year-old Ivan Arreguin Grimaldo of Greeley, was also killed in the incident. The shooting prompted a temporary lockdown of the mall and its adjoining movie theater as police secured the area.
The investigation into the double homicide moved swiftly, with Fort Collins police taking a juvenile suspect into custody the following day. Initially, the suspect's identity was withheld due to his age. However, it was later announced that 16-year-old Bryan Gallego would be charged as an adult in connection with the killings. The 8th Judicial District Attorney's Office filed multiple charges against Gallego, including two counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have suggested that the shooting may have been gang-associated. Gallego is being held on a $2 million cash bond.
In the wake of this tragedy, the victims' sister, Cassandra Grimaldo, spoke of her heartbreak. She described a close-knit relationship with her brothers, stating they had moved to Colorado together years ago and that she was their only sister. Grimaldo expressed her disbelief and sorrow, particularly noting that she believed her brother was simply out shopping for himself when his life was cut short. She learned of her brothers' deaths through social media messages and was left to navigate the aftermath with limited family in the state.
