On May 8, 2025, 49-year-old Rickie Campbell, an African American man from Oakland, California, was fatally shot in the city's Dimond District. The incident occurred around 12:41 a.m. in the 3100 block of MacArthur Boulevard, where approximately 15 rounds were fired. Campbell was critically injured and later died at a hospital. Another 49-year-old man, who was acquainted with Campbell, sustained injuries and managed to seek medical attention independently; his condition has not been
disclosed.
Authorities arrested 45-year-old Rolls Royce Mitchell in connection with the shooting. Mitchell, who has a history of five felony convictions in Alameda County between 1999 and 2011—including assault with a deadly weapon and various drug offenses—was charged with multiple counts, including murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was apprehended in Oakland around 6 a.m. on the day of the incident and is currently being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail, awaiting arraignment.
Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. Both victims had reportedly been at a nearby club prior to the incident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
