In the late afternoon of a Thursday in North Little Rock, Arkansas, a fatal encounter unfolded at the Villas of Country Club apartments. On March 27, 2025, Kristina Knotts-Schwegel, a 50-year-old female employee of the apartment complex, was shot. The North Little Rock Police Department received a call about the shooting at approximately 4:00 p.m. and dispatched officers to the scene on Richsmith Lane.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Kristina Knotts-Schwegel suffering from at
least one gunshot wound. She was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Witnesses at the scene identified a 70-year-old resident of the complex, Janis Bryant, as the person responsible for the shooting. After the incident, Bryant had retreated to her apartment, armed with a handgun.
The situation prompted a significant police response, with authorities evacuating residents from the apartment complex for their safety. Special operations teams were called in to establish contact with Bryant, who had barricaded herself inside her apartment. For nearly an hour, police attempted to communicate with her. When those attempts failed, the tactical team forced entry into the residence. Bryant was then taken into custody without further incident and has been charged with capital murder. One resident later recounted being near Kristina and about to speak with her when Bryant intervened, followed by the sound of a gunshot less than a minute later.
