In the early hours of April 5, 2025, a tragic event unfolded inside a residence on West 21st Street in Tucson, Arizona, culminating in the death of 44-year-old Clayton Moore Bishop. A male, Bishop had been temporarily staying at the home of 34-year-old Dirk Barret Prather when he was fatally shot. Responding to a shooting report just after 10 a.m., patrol officers discovered Bishop inside the residence with gunshot trauma.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Initial accounts from Prather suggested a narrative of self-defense. He first went to a neighbor's house, claiming he had been attacked by a homeless man in his home and had shot him. In a later statement to police, Prather alleged that a roommate had permitted Bishop to stay at the residence and that Bishop had threatened him with a knife. Prather admitted to shooting Bishop while he was sleeping, stating he did so because he felt unsafe. However, investigators found Bishop on a couch with a single gunshot wound to the head, lying on a pillow, a scene that appeared to contradict a self-defense scenario.
Officers at the scene quickly detained Prather as the suspected shooter. Following an investigation that included interviews and a search of the home, detectives arrested Prather and charged him with first-degree murder. He was subsequently booked into the Pima County Jail and held on a $1,000,000 bond.
The legal proceedings have faced potential delays due to concerns about Prather's mental state. His defense team has claimed he suffers from mental health issues and that a medical emergency in jail, which reportedly caused a stroke, has made communication nearly impossible. Consequently, a judge ordered a medical evaluation to determine if Prather is competent to stand trial.
