On February 21, 1986, Patrol Officer Glenn Raye Miles, a 42-year-old male member of the Tohono O'odham Nation, was tragically killed in the line of duty. With a commendable 15 years in law enforcement, Miles had dedicated five years to the United States Customs Service and a decade to the Tohono O'odham National Police Department. On that fateful day, he radioed dispatch to report he was in pursuit of three individuals near the San Miguel border gate on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation,
close to Sells, Arizona.
Responding to his call, fellow officers arrived at the location, approximately one mile north of the border gate, to a grim discovery. Officer Miles had sustained multiple gunshot wounds which proved to be fatal. His service weapon was still with him, suggesting a sudden and violent confrontation. The individuals he was pursuing had vanished, leaving behind a profound loss for his wife, son, and the law enforcement community that held him in high regard.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an extensive investigation was launched to identify and apprehend the assailants responsible for Officer Miles's murder. Despite the exhaustive efforts of law enforcement agencies, no suspects were ever publicly identified or taken into custody. The case grew cold over the years, and to this day, the murder of Patrol Officer Glenn Raye Miles remains an unresolved crime. Those responsible for his untimely death have never been brought to justice, leaving a lasting scar on the community he served and the family he left behind.
