In the quiet community of Whatley, Alabama, a young life was tragically cut short on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Eight-year-old Jayden Howell, a second-grade student at Grove Hill Elementary School, was killed in his home. Jayden, a boy known for his quiet and sweet nature, loved life, football, and playing video games, especially Roblox. He was a proud member of the 'Lions' football team.
On that Sunday morning, deputies from the Clarke County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the family's
residence on Mary Aquilla Road for a welfare check. Upon arrival, they discovered a horrific scene. Jayden and his 39-year-old mother, Ashley Danielle Howell, were found deceased, both having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Jayden's 11-year-old sister, Jayln Howell, was also found with a gunshot wound but was still alive. She was rushed to Grove Hill Hospital before being transferred to a trauma center in Mobile in serious condition.
The investigation identified 43-year-old Edward Bernard Raine as the gunman. Authorities believe Raine, who had a connection to Ashley Howell, shot her and her two children before turning the gun on himself. His body was also discovered at the scene with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident is being investigated as a double murder and suicide.
Court records revealed that Raine had a criminal history dating back to 2001, which included arrests for domestic violence, assault, and burglary. In May 2024, he was arrested for allegedly threatening to shoot and kill Ashley Howell, though those charges were later dismissed. The motive for the tragic event has not been publicly disclosed as the investigation continues. The community was left to mourn the devastating loss of a mother and her young son.
