In the spring of 2025, James Darnell Levert, a 43-year-old Black male, was killed in a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident that led to his death unfolded on the evening of Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at a residence in the western area of the city.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, the fatal confrontation began as a domestic dispute that escalated to violence. The initial altercation reportedly took place between Levert and another individual inside the home.
The argument spilled outside, where a physical fight ensued. During the course of the struggle, both men produced handguns and exchanged gunfire.
Levert sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, on April 17, 2025. The other man involved in the shootout was also injured and was taken into custody by Birmingham police.
Further investigation by law enforcement officials led to the conclusion that the shooting was a case of justifiable homicide, with the other man having acted in self-defense. Consequently, no criminal charges were filed in connection with the death of James Darnell Levert.
