On February 14, 2000, 56-year-old Hispanic male Santiago Perez was fatally shot while sleeping in his home in Pixley, California. The assailant entered the residence during the early morning hours and shot Perez in his bed. At the time of the incident, his four minor children were present in the home.
The case remained unsolved for over a decade until 2013, when Jose Manuel Martinez, a known contract killer, was arrested in Alabama for an unrelated murder. During his interrogation, Mart
inez confessed to killing 36 individuals across at least 12 states, including the murder of Santiago Perez. Martinez claimed that most of his killings were connected to debts owed to Mexican drug cartels.
Following his confession, Martinez was extradited to California, where he pleaded guilty to nine counts of murder, including that of Santiago Perez. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The resolution of this case brought closure to the family of Santiago Perez, who had lived with unanswered questions for many years. The confession and conviction of Martinez highlighted the extensive reach of cartel-related violence and the challenges law enforcement faces in solving such crimes.
