Jose Ruiz Gutierrez, a 23-year-old resident of Los Angeles, was tragically killed on November 23, 2021, in a fatal shooting outside the Bossa Nova restaurant on Sunset Boulevard. Gutierrez and a female companion were waiting in a Mercedes Benz G-wagon to pick up takeout when they were approached by a group of armed robbers. The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. when the woman was targeted by the robbers. Gutierrez, who was armed, attempted to defend himself and his companion but was fatally shot during the confrontation. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed his identity and cause of death shortly after the incident.
The shooting was part of a disturbing trend of "follow-home robberies" that had been plaguing Los Angeles at the time. These crimes typically involved suspects following victims from high-end restaurants, nightclubs, or luxury retailers to their homes or other locations to rob them of valuable items. In Gutierrez's case, the robbers approached the couple while they were still in their vehicle, leading to the fatal encounter.
Following the incident, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an intensive investigation. A specialized task force was formed to address the surge in follow-home robberies, which had seen a significant increase in frequency. The task force's efforts led to the arrest of multiple suspects connected to these crimes. Marquis Ford, a 24-year-old resident of Los Angeles, was arrested in January 2022 for his alleged involvement in Gutierrez's murder. Ford, along with co-defendants Jayon Sanders, Abraham Castillo, and Tyree Singleton, faced charges of murder, second-degree robbery, and attempted second-degree robbery. The criminal complaint also alleged that Ford personally used a semiautomatic firearm during the commission of the crimes.
The investigation revealed that the suspects were part of a larger network involved in numerous follow-home robberies across Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Glendale, and Fontana. The LAPD's task force, with assistance from SWAT units and other local police departments, conducted multiple arrests and recovered significant evidence, including firearms, cash, luxury items, and vehicles used in the crimes. The arrests and subsequent charges marked a critical step in addressing the wave of violent robberies and bringing justice to the victims, including Jose Ruiz Gutierrez.
