Kate Rich, an 80-year-old woman from Ringgold, Texas, was tragically murdered on September 16, 1982. Her disappearance led to an extensive investigation, culminating in the discovery of her remains months later. Portions of her body were found in a wood-burning stove inside the home of Henry Lee Lucas, a self-proclaimed serial killer. Lucas, who had previously served time for the murder of his mother, confessed to Rich's killing, stating that he had stabbed her before disposing of her
remains.
Lucas was arrested on September 11, 1982, on an unrelated weapons charge. Just five days later, he was formally charged with Rich's murder after providing investigators with a confession. His trial took place in Henrietta, Texas, where he pleaded guilty to the crime. The court sentenced him to 75 years in prison, ensuring that he would serve at least 20 years before becoming eligible for parole. Lucas's confession was part of a broader pattern, as he claimed responsibility for over 150 murders across multiple states, though many of these confessions were later disputed.
The case of Kate Rich was one of several that contributed to Lucas's notoriety as a serial killer. His conviction in her murder was followed by additional charges in other cases, including the killing of a teenage girl whom he referred to as his common-law wife.
