In the evening hours of April 28, 2022, a dispute in Northeast Baltimore turned deadly, claiming the life of 19-year-old Adrian Morris, a Black male. The fatal encounter unfolded around 7:35 p.m. in the 5300 block of Belair Road, where Morris was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led Baltimore Police to identify 21-year-old
Terrill Johnson as the suspected shooter. According to the preliminary investigation, the shooting stemmed from an argument between Johnson and Morris. Johnson was subsequently arrested and faced charges including second-degree murder in connection with Morris's death.
During legal proceedings, a different narrative of the events of that evening emerged. Johnson's defense attorney argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming that Morris had threatened him, his girlfriend, his baby, and another young boy. The confrontation reportedly began inside a liquor store after Morris approached Johnson about a purported $10 drug-related debt owed by Johnson's girlfriend. The defense contended that Morris followed Johnson to his vehicle and made threatening gestures, leading Johnson to believe his family was in imminent danger.
The prosecution countered this self-defense claim, pointing to video evidence that they argued did not show Morris with his hands in the satchel he was wearing. They asserted that 'scary words' alone did not justify the use of deadly force and highlighted that Johnson was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior conviction.
Ultimately, a jury weighed the conflicting accounts. In April 2023, nearly a year after the shooting, Terrill Johnson was found not guilty of second-degree murder. However, he was convicted of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, along with three weapons-related charges.
