Debra Colliander, a 25-year-old woman, was abducted on June 23, 1980, from the parking lot of a shopping center in Aurora, Illinois. She was taken to the apartment of Bruce Lindahl, a suspected serial killer, where she was raped. Colliander managed to escape after Lindahl fell asleep and reported the crime to the police. Lindahl was arrested and charged, but he was released on bail. On October 7, 1980, Colliander went missing after leaving work.
Her trial, scheduled for 1981, was canceled due to her absence, and all charges against Lindahl were dropped.
In 1982, Colliander's decomposed body was discovered in an Oswego cornfield. Investigators later received information from a man who claimed that Lindahl had offered him money to kill Colliander to prevent her from testifying at trial. This led authorities to suspect Lindahl as the perpetrator of her murder, as he had a clear motive. Lindahl himself died in 1981, reportedly accidentally slashing a major artery in his leg while stabbing another victim to death.
Authorities believe Lindahl was responsible for multiple murders and rapes in the Chicago suburbs. His DNA has been linked to other cold cases, confirming his involvement in several crimes. Despite his death, investigators continue to examine his past actions to determine the full extent of his crimes.
