Serhonda Burnett, a 46-year-old resident of Oswego, Illinois, died on January 13, 2024, due to gunshot wounds. The incident occurred in the afternoon when Aurora Police Department received 911 calls reporting a vehicle crash and shots fired near the intersection of Prairie Street and Woodlawn Avenue in Aurora, Illinois.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found Serhonda Burnett suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. She was the sole person in the car. Aurora Fire Department paramedics transported her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later. No other injuries were reported during the incident.
The investigation led by the Aurora Police Department identified Travares Mitchell, 49, as the suspect responsible for Burnett's death. Mitchell was Burnett’s domestic partner. A warrant for his arrest was issued on February 21, 2024, and he was taken into custody on March 6, 2024, in Orlando, Florida.
Travares Mitchell has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder, as well as additional felonies including unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and armed habitual criminal. He is currently being held at the Kane County Jail, with his next court date scheduled for April 3, 2024.
