Linda Faye Sutherlin, a 21-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on November 4, 1971, in Pearland, Brazoria County, Texas. Her death was the result of a brutal murder, in which she suffered 72 bullet wounds to her back, shoulders, and legs. The case led to the conviction of Anthony Michael Knoppa, who was sentenced to 50 years in prison in 1972 for her killing. Another individual, Harry Andrew Lanham, was also sentenced to 25 years in prison for his involvement in the crime.
Knoppa had previously been investigated in connection with the deaths of six women across Montgomery, Harris, and Brazoria counties, though he was only convicted in Sutherlin’s case. His criminal history included a prior conviction for rape, in which he had taken a young woman to an auto salvage yard and assaulted her repeatedly. Due to the victim’s terror, she was unable to testify against him, leading to a plea deal for a lesser offense.
Lanham, who was considered a key witness in multiple cases against Knoppa, was killed in 1972 when he attempted to grab an officer’s gun in the Harris County Jail. The officer shot him, effectively eliminating crucial testimony that could have led to further convictions against Knoppa.
Knoppa was released from prison in 1989 after serving 15 years of his sentence. Authorities expressed concern over his release, as he had previously threatened to seek revenge against law enforcement officers involved in his case.
Sutherlin was laid to rest in Harris Cemetery, located in Swampers, Franklin Parish, Louisiana. Her tragic death remains a stark reminder of the violence that plagued the region during that time.
