Megan Kirkland, a 19-year-old woman from Abilene, Texas, tragically lost her life on August 16, 2020. She was attending a large house party on Fulwiler Road when a fight broke out. In an attempt to break up the fight, someone fired warning shots into the air, but another individual from a different direction began shooting, and Megan was fatally hit by a bullet.
The Taylor County Sheriff's Office conducted an extensive investigation, interviewing over 80 people who were present at the
party. They have been looking for 30-40 more individuals to gather more information. Megan's death was ruled as a homicide, and the case remains under investigation.
In May 2021, George Girard Johnson Jr., a student in the Abilene Independent School District, was indicted for Megan's murder. Johnson Jr. pleaded guilty to the charge of Deadly Conduct and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in March 2023. During the court proceedings, Megan's mother expressed her forgiveness towards Johnson Jr., stating that she believes he did not intend to kill her daughter.
Additionally, three other individuals—Stephanie Avalos , Kimberly Renee Limas, and Ramon Aguirres Jr.—were charged with Tampering with Evidence in connection to Megan's death. They were accused of trying to cover up Johnson Jr.'s involvement by burning his clothing and coordinating their stories to mislead the investigation. These suspects are still awaiting their day in court.
Megan Kirkland was remembered as a vibrant and caring individual who touched the lives of many. She worked as a waitress and a receptionist, and was planning to attend Cisco College. Her family and friends continue to honor her memory and seek justice for her untimely death.
