Makayla Renee Bunting, also known as Kayla, was a 22-year-old woman of mixed ethnicity who tragically lost her life on June 5, 2014, in Abilene, Texas. She was a loving and devoted mother to her two young children, Jaslene Johnson and Kayden Liam Johnson. Kayla was known for her outspoken, funny, and big-hearted nature. She had a passion for softball and horseback riding, and she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.
On the day of her death, Kayla was at the Windsor Place
Apartments complex with her 2-week-old son and her 4-year-old daughter. Her boyfriend, Chevayae Magic Johnson, who was 23 years old at the time, allegedly shot Kayla in the head while she was holding her son. Johnson then shot himself, but he survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Kayla's son was found by police with a hand injury, believed to have been caused by the same bullet that killed his mother.
Chevayae Johnson was indicted on a first-degree murder charge in connection with Kayla's death. He was also charged with injury to a child for the harm caused to Kayla's son. In September 2014, a Taylor County grand jury indicted Johnson, and he faced trial for his actions. In June 2016, Johnson pleaded guilty to murder and received a 55-year prison sentence. The sentences for murder and injury to a child were to run concurrently.
