Manuel Hernandez Talavera, her boyfriend at the time, was arrested and later indicted for her murder. According to court documents, Talavera hit Soña in the head with a gun and then shot her in the abdomen while they were inside a home on the 1900 block of Clinton Street in Abilene. A witness described seeing Talavera hit Soña with the gun and hearing the gunshot before discovering Soña had been shot. Emergency crews arrived on the scene but found Soña deceased.
Talavera was charged with first-degree murder and was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to the crime. The tragic incident occurred on the 11th birthday of Soña's daughter, who was home at the time but managed to hide and call 9-1-1. Talavera was tracked down and arrested the following day in Hamlin, Texas.
