On March 3, 2023, in Houston, Texas, 55-year-old Laura Marie "Rabbit" Sherrard and her 16-year-old son, Alexander Conroy "Bunny" Sherrard, were tragically killed in a murder-suicide perpetrated by Laura's husband, Paul Rubin, aged 64. The incident occurred in their residence on Indigo Street in the Meyerland area. Laura had placed a distress call to 911, during which the dispatcher overheard an argument followed by gunshots.
Upon arrival, Houston Police Department officers forced entry into the home and discovered the bodies of Laura, Alexander, and Paul, who had died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Laura was born on October 25, 1967, in Houston and spent much of her childhood in Kenney, Texas. She was a confirmed Catholic with a deep devotion to her faith. A trailblazer from a young age, Laura was the first girl to play baseball in the Boys’ Major Division of Bellville Little League. She excelled academically and artistically, earning recognition in poetry, mock trial, and theater during her time at Bellville High School. Laura pursued higher education at the University of Texas, obtaining an English degree, followed by a Master's in Education from Houston Baptist University. Her professional career included roles at the Harris County Sheriff's Department, teaching at Bellville High School, and serving as a loss prevention agent at Nordstrom. Known for her love of animals, she was affectionately called "Rabbit" by her family.
Alexander, born on April 16, 2006, in Houston, was a student at The Parish School, where he was recognized for his kindness, intelligence, and sense of humor. He had a passion for animals, particularly horses, and was known for his artistic talents and love of reading. Alexander's gentle nature and bright spirit left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
The tragic deaths of Laura and Alexander have left a profound void in the lives of their surviving family members, friends, and the community. Their passing underscores the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help in such situations. In the wake of this tragedy, local organizations have emphasized the availability of resources for individuals experiencing domestic abuse, encouraging those in need to reach out for support.
