Among them was Sandra Botelho, a 24-year-old Caucasian woman, who vanished into the night on August 11, 1988. Her disappearance marked the beginning of a long and agonizing wait for her family, a period of uncertainty that stretched for months as the community grappled with the growing fear of a predator in their midst.
The grim reality of Sandra Botelho's fate came to light on April 24, 1989. Her body was discovered in the woods alongside Interstate 195 in the nearby town of Marion. The discovery confirmed the community's worst fears; she was a victim of the elusive murderer who would come to be known as the New Bedford Highway Killer. Her death was one of at least nine connected to this unidentified serial killer, who preyed on women in the area between 1988 and 1989, leaving a trail of grief and unanswered questions. All of the victims were either known to be involved in sex work or had struggled with drug addiction.
The investigation into the New Bedford Highway Killings has been a long and frustrating one for law enforcement. Over the years, several individuals have been considered persons of interest in the string of murders. One man, Kenneth Ponte, a local attorney, was arrested for the murder of one of the victims, Rochelle Dopierala, but the charges were later dropped. Another individual, Daniel Tavares Jr., who was already in prison for the murder of his mother, indirectly claimed responsibility for the highway killings in a threatening letter. While he was convicted of another, unrelated murder, he has never been charged in connection with the highway slayings.
