Border Patrol Agent Robert Wimer Rosas, Jr. was tragically killed on July 23, 2009, while on patrol near Campo, California. At approximately 9:15 pm, Agent Rosas was ambushed and shot multiple times after exiting his patrol vehicle on the Shockey Truck Trail along the U.S.-Mexico border. The assailants, a group of five armed men, had crossed from Mexico into the United States with the intent of robbing a Border Patrol agent. Three of the men crossed into the U.S. while the other two remained in Mexico to act as lookouts. The three men who crossed set up an ambush and lured Agent Rosas out of his vehicle. After shooting him multiple times, they robbed him of his gear bag, handcuffs, firearm, and night vision goggles. Responding agents found Agent Rosas suffering from several gunshot wounds, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into Agent Rosas' murder led to the apprehension of four of the five suspects, including a 17-year-old believed to have fired the fatal shots. This juvenile offender was later sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the murder.
