Karen Vergata was last heard from on Valentine's Day in 1996. At the time of her disappearance, she was believed to have been working as a sex worker. No missing person report was ever filed. Her partial remains were the first of what would become a string of gruesome discoveries along the shores of Long Island, attributed to a then-unknown serial killer. Her case, for a long time, was simply referred to as 'Fire Island Jane Doe' or 'Jane Doe No. 7'. The identification of her remains in 2023 was a significant breakthrough in the long-running investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders, a case that has haunted Long Island for decades.
In July 2023, a significant development occurred in the broader Gilgo Beach case with the arrest of Rex Heuermann, a Long Island architect. He was charged with the murders of three other women whose remains were found in the same area: Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. While Heuermann has been named the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, authorities have not officially charged him in Karen Vergata's death. The investigation into any potential connection between Heuermann and Vergata's homicide is ongoing, and authorities have remained tight-lipped about any suspects they may have in her case.
