Phillip Cabot Lloyd Martin, a 47-year-old white male, vanished under suspicious circumstances on September 30, 1993, in Stockton, California. That morning, he drove his ex-wife to work and was expected to return later to pick up their daughters from school—a routine he had consistently followed since the start of the school year. When he failed to appear, concern quickly escalated.
Martin, who was living a transient lifestyle at the time, worked as a carpenter and construction laborer and resided in his gold 1987 Chevrolet Celebrity. His vehicle was later discovered abandoned and burned in a vineyard near Pearson and Morse Roads, south of Lodi.
Despite extensive investigations, Martin's body has never been found. However, his case drew renewed attention in the early 2000s due to potential links to Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog, infamously known as the 'Speed Freak Killers.' This duo was convicted of multiple murders spanning the 1980s and 1990s, with authorities suspecting they may have had as many as fifteen victims. Martin's daughter recalled that her father had worked with Shermantine and identified him in a photo lineup during her childhood. She also believed that Martin, Shermantine, and Herzog had used drugs together.
In 2012, Shermantine, while on death row, led investigators to an abandoned well in Linden, California, which contained approximately 300 human bones and personal items. He claimed the well held up to twenty victims and attributed all the murders to Herzog, asserting he only assisted in disposing of the bodies. Among the remains identified were those of Chevelle Wheeler and Cyndi Vanderheiden. However, Martin's remains were not found in the well.
Herzog's legal journey saw his initial 78-year sentence reduced to 14 years after a court ruled his confession had been coerced. He was paroled in 2010 but took his own life in January 2012 upon learning that Shermantine had begun cooperating with authorities. Despite the associations and discoveries, no arrests have been made specifically in connection to Martin's disappearance, and his case remains unsolved, with foul play strongly suspected.
