The occasion was a birthday celebration for a two-year-old child, drawing roughly 100 to 150 guests to the banquet hall located on Lucile Avenue. The atmosphere was celebratory until shortly before 6:00 p.m., when the festivities were violently interrupted.
Amari, who had a passion for football and basketball, had reportedly stepped away from his father to speak with a local rapper known as MBNel who was also in attendance.
Chaos erupted as multiple masked gunmen approached the venue and opened fire, unleashing a barrage of at least 50 rounds from several different firearms. Witnesses described a scene of panic where adults shielded children and families scrambled for cover. Law enforcement officials later indicated that the attack appeared to be targeted, potentially directed at the rapper Amari had been standing near. Amidst the gunfire, Amari was struck in the chest. His father, Patrick Peterson, recounted the harrowing moments following the shooting, describing how he found his son crawling on the ground and attempted to perform CPR in a desperate bid to resuscitate him.
