On August 24, 1992, William Patterson, a 67-year-old African American man, was fatally shot during an attempted armed robbery in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. The assailant, Ralph Harris, also shot James Patterson, who survived the attack. This violent incident was part of a broader crime spree by Harris, who, over a three-year period from July 1992 to August 1995, committed multiple murders, attempted murders, sexual assaults, and armed robberies.
