On December 11, 1986, 18-year-old Tammy Cofer Wilson, a white female, was abducted from her home in the Bonnie Doone neighborhood of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her nude body was discovered hours later by her husband in a nearby wooded area. Tammy had been raped and shot at point-blank range.
Tammy's murder was part of a series of violent crimes committed by Ronald Adrin Gray, a then-20-year-old Specialist Four in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Gray's crime spree included multiple rapes and murders in the Fayetteville area during 1986 and early 1987.
Following a thorough investigation, Gray was arrested and faced charges in both civilian and military courts. In civilian court, he pleaded guilty to the murders of Tammy Cofer Wilson and another victim, Linda Jean Coats, receiving multiple life sentences. Subsequently, a military court convicted him of additional crimes, including the murders of Private Laura Lee Vickery-Clay and Kimberly Ann Ruggles, sentencing him to death.
As of the latest available information, Ronald Gray remains incarcerated at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, awaiting execution. His case has undergone numerous appeals over the years, with the U.S. Supreme Court denying his petition in 2016.
