On September 13, 1973, Phillip Mitchell, a 20-year-old African American man, was murdered in New York City. Waldo Grant, a 26-year-old African American man, lured Mitchell to his apartment at 203 West 91st Street in Manhattan. There, Grant struck Mitchell over the head with a lead pipe, killing him. In an attempt to stage the murder as an accident or suicide, Grant dragged Mitchell's body to the roof of the building and threw it into the rear yard below.
